2.Hobbies and intense interests

Somebody once told me that the difference between OCD and autistic obsessions, is that the OCD sufferer feels trapped by his obsessions, and the AC positively revels in them. In fact, many feel that the term "obsession" is incorrect in this context, and we should actually use the term "Perseverations".

Certainly, many of us on the spectrum thoroughly enjoy our obsessions/perserverations/intense interests, even though some of them may be a little far from the mainstream. And who knows what good could come of it? Gregor Mendel's obsessions with peas did lead to the discovery of the science of genetics (and I'd swear Mendel was on the spectrum). In fact, few great things have been achieved without somebody, somewhere having an obsessive interest.

The following interests are pursued by ACs on a.s.a.

Trains
Science-fiction
Star Trek (in all it's incarnations)
Babylon 5
Stargate SG-1
Star Wars
Collecting Beanie-babies
Telegraph poles
Lego modelling
Teletubbies
Thomas the Tank Engine
"Blues Clues"
Computers
Computer and video games
Dragons
Psychology
Tall ships
Barenaked Ladies (singing group)
Roller coasters
Escalators
Laundry equipment
Dinosaurs
Minidisc
The Police (the pop band)
Genesis
Chris Morris comedies
Political satire
Buses
Disability rights
Pregnancy and maternity care campaigning
And of course, the over-riding obsession of all of us on a.s.a., NTs and ACs alike: AUTISM!
